Technical University of Applied Sciences Mannheim

The Technical University of Applied Sciences Mannheim (TH Mannheim) is a modern campus university. It bundles engineering and life sciences, social work and design and thus uses many interfaces for interdisciplinary cooperation. It has systematically enhanced and expanded its activities in the field of application-oriented research and technology transfer over the last years. It has established a number of research topics. The scientists of TH Mannheim cooperate closely with companies and are actively involved in networks. More than 5,200 students prepare for their future working life in one of the 34 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs. More than 80 young scientists are working on their dissertation in the laboratories of TH Mannheim. They take part in research projects at the university.

Research

The research competence of the university lies in applied (collaborative) research with small and medium-sized enterprises, large-scale industry and academic partners. The fields of activity are described by interdisciplinary topics like “Health Research and Biomedical Engeneering”, “Artificial Intelligence and Digitization”, “Sustainable Management, Energy and Environment”. Research focuses on medical biotechnology / medical technology, medical informatics, intelligent sensor technology, artificial intelligence and environmental analysis. The TH Mannheim has concentrated its outstanding research know-how in these specific research areas in competence centers.
The innovation partnership “M2Aind – Multimodal analytics and intelligent sensorics in the healthcare industry”, launched in 2017, is one of the flagship projects as part of the program “Research at Universities of Applied Sciences” of the Federal Ministery of Research, Technology and Space. In “M2Aind” 37 partners from the healthcare industry are researching the interface between biomedicine and information technology. The Mannheim research campus project “M2olie” (Mannheim Molecular Intervention Environment) is a second important project supported by the Ministry. The TH Mannheim is one of the partners promoting research questions in tumor biology. The scientists at TH Mannheim have raised more than € 11 million in research- related third-party funds in 2024. They did this with more than 120 various projects. The internationally oriented activities are increasing.

Open forms of innovation, interdisciplinary cooperation and social networking are the strategic guidelines for the sustainable development of Mannheim University of Applied Sciences. They also apply to the research activities.
The university uses the “Design Thinking” approach for interdisciplinary innovation projects in teaching and research – here it is the only German university in the related network of Stanford University. It is as well part of the Design Factory Global Network.
The university – with its Center of Virtual Engineering Rhein-Neckar – was involved in the EU project CHARMING and supported the development of a European training network for immersive learning in chemical engineering.
TH Mannheim participated with partners from four countries in the development and expansion of the international platform “Health Axis Europe Partnering”. The aim of the project was to facilitate technology transfer between academia and companies of all sizes in the health sector by means of scouting and matching sessions.
